Custom Cars Used In Stock Car Movies

Custom Cars Used In Stock Car MoviesThere were two custom cars used in stock car movies:"The Fireball 500"and the "Thunder Charger." The "Fireball 500" was a 1966 Plymouth Barrucuda with two custom made wrap around windshields, sport mirrors, custom rear back with spoilers and custom center taillight, and rear window. The custom nose was made using two1966 GTO grills to form the custom nose, which had Cibie headlights mounted on the radiator shroud.Tubular grills concealed the headlights. This had a 426 CID Hemi engine with two four barrel carburators, that fed air to the custom air injection pipes on the hood.It rolled on Firestone Wide Oval Tires, and Radir One Ribbed Mag Wheels with three prong knock off caps. The paint job took about two about a week to complete, with so many pearls, starting with pearl white and ending with burgandy in the rear.Plymouth was painted on the front hood. The yellow fireballs had "Fireball 500" painted in candy red in side.

Frankie Avalon drove this in "Fireball 500."Fabian had the pleasure of driving the custom Charger called the :"The Thunder Charger",with cut open roof, long fenders, front and rear.It also had the name on the doors. The car was originally white with candy red paint in the long front fenders and candy blue in the rear fenders, however,George Barrris could not leave well enough alone, and went with a psycodelic paint job,in purples yellows and black. The car used the same ralley Magnum Mopar wheels. They did have red,but wavy graphic prints, are part on the new psycodelic paint job. The car also had white walls.Neither car was kept oringinal colors after, their movies they were in at the theaters.George Barris had a problem of always updating his cars,to look new.Another true fact,is he would trade off the wheel tire combinations, that is why they do not had the original mags and tire combinations.

  1. I read an article that said the fireball 500 barracuda has the original 273 formula s motor in it and always has since 1966.

  2. Actually Jack, the Fireball 500 is powered by a 426 Hemi with two four barrel carburetors. The injector pipes actually work. Just like those large triangular dragsters rear engine scoops.
The cold air sucks in the air injector pipes giving it power like cold air sucks in those scoops and gives it extremely super horse power going over 300 miles per hour with flames coming out the headers. I have many Barris Kustoms books for reference material. CustomX
